Following its insolvency under self-administration, a surprising development is emerging for YT Industries: Company founder Markus Flossmann takes back the company. After a private equity investor cancelled its financing, YT had to file for insolvency in July 2025. The creditors' committee has now approved the buyback offer from the founder, who is investing personal capital to secure customer orders.

The Franconian direct mail order company YT Industries is getting a second chance: company founder Markus Flossmann is buying back his former company and wants to make a fresh start. This surprising development follows the insolvency in self-administration filed in July 2025which became necessary after the main shareholder - a private equity investor - stopped financing the company. The creditors' committee has already approved Flossmann's offer and the final contracts are currently being drawn up. The takeover by the founder could breathe new life into the manufacturer known for its gravity-orientated mountain bikes after the search for external investors was unsuccessful.

The financial difficulties at YT Industries became apparent at the beginning of July 2025 when the previous main shareholder - an unnamed private equity investor - announced that it would no longer continue to finance the company. This decision forced the management to file for insolvency proceedings under self-administration, which created a three-month window for the search for new investors. Flossmann, who founded YT Industries in 2008, commented clearly on the efforts to find external investors in a statement: "Unfortunately, the offers we received were an absolute joke and not worthy of serious consideration." This situation ultimately prompted him to act as a buyer himself and buy back the company. The creditors' committee has already approved his offer and the contracts are being finalised to restart the business under a new structure.

Effects on employees and operations

The insolvency has already had a concrete impact on the business operations and workforce of YT Industries. In order to prevent services being provided that the insolvent company could no longer pay for, the majority of employees have been made redundant. Only a small team currently remains in place to process customer enquiries and fulfil current orders. This measure is part of the insolvency proceedings and is intended to limit the company's financial obligations. Flossmann emphasises that the negotiations should be concluded quickly in order to minimise the impact on customers. It is not yet known how many of the redundant employees could be rehired after the restart. However, the takeover by the founder could offer the opportunity to retain at least some of the jobs.

Securing customer orders

For customers who have already placed orders and are waiting for their bikes, there is a clear signal from Markus Flossmann. He assures: "Every customer order will either be fulfilled (if the bike is in stock) or refunded. To ensure this, I have personally invested a considerable amount of private capital." This personal financial investment by the founder is intended to ensure that no customer is harmed by the insolvency. According to Flossmann, outstanding orders should be finalised within the next four to six weeks - either by delivering the bikes ordered or by refunding the payments made. This promise is particularly important for trust in the brand, as direct mail order companies such as YT Industries generally work with advance payment and customers are therefore particularly at risk of losing their money in the event of insolvency.

International effects

YT Industries GmbH in Germany is primarily affected by the insolvency, while the company's international subsidiaries are affected in different ways. No detailed information is available on the situation of YT Industries LTD in England, which leaves open questions about the business situation there. The US subsidiary, on the other hand, is continuing to operate normally according to the company and is not experiencing any restrictions in its business operations. These different effects show the complex corporate structure of the internationally active bicycle manufacturer. For customers in the USA, this means that they can continue to order bikes and take advantage of services without restrictions, while delays or restrictions are to be expected in Germany and possibly also in the UK until the restart under Flossmann's leadership has been fully implemented.

Dialogue with the community

It is particularly noteworthy that Markus Flossmann addressed the mountain bike community directly after the takeover became known. He spoke personally in the MTB-News.de forum and took part in the discussion about the insolvency and the planned restart. In several posts, he answered critical questions, gave insights into the sales process and spoke openly about difficult decisions in dealing with the employees. For example, he described how difficult it had been for him to explain the difficult situation to 150 people. He also responded directly to accusations of responsibility for the crisis and made it clear that he had only returned when YT Industries was already in difficulties. This open dialogue with the community could be an important factor in restoring trust in the brand and laying the foundations for a successful new start.

The history of YT:

In 2006, Markus Flossmann and Jacob Fatih founded the internet platform "Sponsoree Deutschland GmbH", which acted as a link between athletes and potential sponsors.

In 2008, the company launched its first mountain bike on the market under the Sponsoree brand: the dirt bike called Dirt Love. Two years later, Stefan Willared joined the company as Chief Technology Director (CTO) and Managing Partner. Following the expansion of the product range in the gravity sector, Sponsoree Deutschland GmbH was renamed YT Industries GmbH (Young Talent Industries) in 2011.

Today, YT develops, produces and sells various types of mountain bikes, including models for dirt jump, freeride, downhill, enduro and all mountain. With the CAPRA model, YT set new standards in the enduro segment, while the TUES model received the Red Dot Design Award in 2010 and was honoured several times as Downhill Bike of the Year. YT sells its products directly via its own website, without using retailers or shops. The company has experienced strong growth in the last three years and now sells its products worldwide. In 2019, YT expanded its range with the Decoy e-bike, which was followed by other e-bike variants.

On 16 July 2025, YT Industries announced that it would initiate restructuring proceedings in self-administration in accordance with German law.

In 2012, YT added professional mountain biker Andreu Lacondeguy to its team, followed by freerider Cameron Zink in 2014. Since 2016, YT has also been represented in the Mountain Bike World Cup with "The YT Mob" and was able to celebrate numerous successes with Aaron Gwin, one of the most successful downhill racers, from 2016 to 2018. In the very first year of its World Cup involvement, YT secured overall victory in the Downhill with Aaron Gwin, followed by another overall victory in the Downhill World Cup in 2017
