Then you are already on the way to the glaciers. The climb up to the Fiescheralp takes some effort. A dark, cold tunnel leads to the legendary Märjela between the Aletsch and Fiescher glaciers. White-grey, jagged and mighty, the ice masses wind their way through a corset of rock. 23 kilometres long. Up to 900 metres thick. An unimaginable 27 billion tonnes of ice. The great Aletsch Glacier is a true titan - and the mightiest glacier in the Alps! But the Breithorn looms over everything. The path up to almost two and a half thousand metres is the royal ascent of the Stoneman Glaciara. An old military road takes you above the tree line: 12 per cent gradient, 14 hairpin bends and 1600 metres of altitude difference up to the pass. Once at the top: Silence. Your muscles are burning, your heart is racing, civilisation lies far below in the valley.

More than 200 types of minerals were found by the local explorers, more than a dozen of them nowhere else in the world. An old Roman trade route leads along the breathtaking Twingi Gorge through Ernen, one of the most beautiful mountain villages in Switzerland. Because at the Stoneman, everyone is their own benchmark. Whoever conquers the course in one day can call the Stoneman gold trophy their own. You can also take more time. For a successful finish after two days there is the silver trophy, after three days bronze. All finishers are united by the triumphant feeling of punching the stamp card at the last checkpoint: Done!

The Stoneman Glaciara is open every year from around mid-June to the end of October.
