The number of road deaths has fallen by 63% overall since 2000. Nevertheless, in 2022 within built-up areas 881 people died in road accidents. In concrete terms, this means that 62% of those killed in the city (or village) were cycling (276) or walking (274), while only 19% (170) were travelling by car. For example, the number of car occupants killed in 2022 fell by an above-average 73%, while the number of cyclists killed in accidents fell by only 28%. One could conclude from this: Cars are getting safer (and bigger), bikers are still relatively unprotected in traffic.
In total, road traffic fatalities in 2022 1192 people died in a car, which corresponds to 43% of all road deaths. 492 people died on a moped, motorbike etc., 474 while cycling - including 208 on a pedelec. Unfortunately, a further 368 pedestrians also lost their lives. 10 people were killed in accidents involving e-scooters.
Although the majority of road deaths are still car occupants, their share of all road deaths has fallen from 59% in 2000 to 43% in 2022. The Percentage of cyclists killed on the other hand, has almost doubled from 9 % to 17 %.
