Unfortunately only a symbolic image: all is well with cycling here.
In 2022, 2788 people lost their lives in road accidents in Germany. The majority of cycling and pedestrian traffic takes place in urban areas, which is also reflected in the accident figures. 62% of those killed in urban areas were travelling by bicycle or on foot, while only 19% were travelling by car.

The number of road deaths has fallen by 63% overall since 2000. Nevertheless, in 2022 within built-up areas 881 people died in road accidents. In concrete terms, this means that 62% of those killed in the city (or village) were cycling (276) or walking (274), while only 19% (170) were travelling by car. For example, the number of car occupants killed in 2022 fell by an above-average 73%, while the number of cyclists killed in accidents fell by only 28%. One could conclude from this: Cars are getting safer (and bigger), bikers are still relatively unprotected in traffic.

Almost 2800 road deaths in 2022: 474 of them cyclists

In total, road traffic fatalities in 2022 1192 people died in a car, which corresponds to 43% of all road deaths. 492 people died on a moped, motorbike etc., 474 while cycling - including 208 on a pedelec. Unfortunately, a further 368 pedestrians also lost their lives. 10 people were killed in accidents involving e-scooters.

Although the majority of road deaths are still car occupants, their share of all road deaths has fallen from 59% in 2000 to 43% in 2022. The Percentage of cyclists killed on the other hand, has almost doubled from 9 % to 17 %.
