XXL airtime at Darkfest, big bike flips, monster drops, slopestyle tricks - Elias Ruso (24) can do it all. But sometimes things go wrong. Here is his medical record.

Elias Ruso makes his damage report. The 24-year-old freerider can do just about anything, including the biggest jumps. But many a trick has gone wrong. Read here what, how and why Elias Ruso has broken everything.

Shoulder broken

Shortly after the left shoulder, I blew up my right shoulder (Tossy 2) when I under-rotated a flipwhip and fell onto the bike. But no big deal! After eight weeks, the issue was over. Here too: lots of training, because strong shoulder muscles hold the bones in place. I can't feel anything anymore. And that's despite the fact that I ripped a flip double whip in 2021, crashed backwards onto my bike and broke my shoulder blade. This forced break lasted six weeks. Annoying!

Fibula broken

In January 2020, I jumped a 3-whip into the airbag, but it wrapped around my foot so stupidly that it cracked: Fibula off. Eight screws, a titanium plate, a ten-week break and lots and lots of physio, and the incident was over and my confidence in my leg returned.

Right leg: Almost exploded

In 2018, I developed major bone marrow oedema - nasty thing! I flipped over a motocross ramp, pulled by a cable. But far too fast. Instead of twelve metres, I flew 17 metres and left the landing hill far behind me. The impact was like an explosion in my right leg. The doctor said afterwards: I had narrowly missed a comminuted fracture! Instead: Bone oedema. Four months off, then I could get back on my bike. Lucky me!

Collarbone out

In 2017, I blew up my acromioclavicular joint (Tossy 3). I was filming my first video clip and thought it would be super cool to do a nosebonk on the seat of an old motorbike. But I got stuck, flew over the handlebars and hammered my shoulder into the ground. Thank God I didn't have the shoulder operated on and was able to lower the collarbone through strength training so that the bone didn't stick out. My sports doctor is now my friend and he gave me exactly the right advice.

My strategy

I pay attention to my diet: you are what you eat. Therefore: little junk, little sugar. I love cooking and always make things fresh. I've been a vegetarian for a few years now. I like meat, but that's my small contribution to the ecological balance. Years ago, when I could barely get my fingertips on the floor, I started doing yoga, fascia training and stretching. Without it, I'd be walking around like Quasimodo. And then, of course, strength training. Very important, because muscles are natural protectors. I train 3-4 times a week (2 hours each time), functional fitness, but also hypertrophy (4-5 sets, 10-15 Wh.)

Lightning start

In 2013 - three months after I started cycling - I tore the bursa in my left knee. I was left with a long scar because the doctors had to remove the cut bursa. I had tried to learn a tuck no hander, crashed and fell with my knee - without pads at the time - into the brake disc. Ouch! With a lot of consistent physio, I got the knee under control again.
