The internet is like a big, colourful box of parts in the workshop: confusing, overcrowded, unstructured - and also full of junk. The MYBIKE editorial team has set out to pick out premium parts from the "parts box", in short: to reduce the unmanageable abundance of digital offers to a few tips. We recommend bike podcasts and YouTube channels. If you have any other suggestions, please let us know: info@mybike-magazin.de

Five cycling podcast recommendations

Bicycle podcast: "Enjoy your bike"

We thought long and hard about which show to start the series with, as the most highly acclaimed podcasts in the cycling scene are usually quite specialised and at home in competitive sport or some kind of extreme. Wrong target group. Ingo Quendler and Dan Miessen's format appealed to us precisely because of the broad range of topics and the language, which is not too coded but not boring even for cyclists with a basis of specialised knowledge. The episodes on the latest technology for bikes and the sense and sometimes nonsense of equipment are particularly instructive for everyone, no matter what type of bike you ride. Thinking outside the box is also never wrong! In the current 115 episodes of "Enjoy your bike", the main topic changes cheerfully every fortnight from cycling holidays and bikepacking to cycling and cycling policy issues, but cycling events and indoor cycling are also major topics.

The associated Zwift* community perhaps takes up a little too much space - just skip to the next chapter, the consistently very long episodes of between two and three and a half hours are well organised. Guests are also regularly invited: real greats such as former racing drivers Heinrich Hausler and Kai Hundertmarck or globetrotter Jonas Deichmann, as well as interesting non-celebrity athletes and bright minds from the industry. The atmosphere is homely, more "chat" than interview, which is probably why the guests take their time. Two other elementary points for a good podcast: The presenters seem consistently unbiased, have opinions on each topic but don't try to force them on us. And the recording technique is good! During our research, we also had to trudge through recordings with the telephone quality of the 70s. "Enjoy your bike" is also available on YouTube.

Bicycle podcast: "pressedienst-fahrrad"

The "pressedienst-fahrrad" - or pdf - is actually not necessarily a medium for the end consumer, but provides bike journalists like us with inspiration, information, news, image material and also philosophical approaches to the subject of bikes. And if you want to use their services, you have to pay for the convenience. Their podcast, on the other hand, is free and made for cyclists. Every month, the competent team talks about the current topic of interest in the editorial department.

This can be a specific political question, a fusion of topics such as e-bikes and cycle touring, reports from a trade fair or - very interestingly - an episode about workpacking, i.e. remote working while travelling by bike. The expert is Gunnar Fehlau, a member of the pdf team. The people around presenter Hans Dorsch also use their good network in the industry to bring interesting guests who are deeply involved in the subject to the microphone. Each episode lasts between ten and 90 minutes, so they don't forcefully fill up an episode or shorten it to keep it to a standard length - very good! The QR code leads to the complete list on Spotify. Maybe there will be something for MYBIKE in December.

Bicycle podcast: "Biketour Global"

The "Biketour Global" podcast is a cycling podcast recommendation for cycling trips and cycling holidays. Bikepacking, the right equipment and life on a bike are the topics here, with the focus on long-distance destinations in Europe and around the world. The best way to learn is from the greats, they say. And you can learn a lot from the stories that editor Martin Moschek discusses with his guests, friends or even himself.

Correct or more suitable equipment, routes and their planning or even behaviour in crises - most of this could also be transferred to the local tour. For those who like to listen: Moschek has the right blog for the topic: the organisation, layout and above all the illustrations are great, and the length of the text is not overlong, as is so often the case. The podcasts can last up to two hours and are interesting enough for that. The sound sounds too muffled at first, but you get used to it, especially with the combination of topics, guests and the great images in your head. And the blog is what makes this channel special.

"Take a bike" - the future of urban mobility

Bicycle podcast: "Take a bike" - the future of urban mobilityPhoto: Screenshot/Nimms RadBicycle podcast: "Take a bike" - the future of urban mobility

How can cities become more bike-friendly? Which technologies and concepts will shape the mobility of tomorrow? In the "Nimms Rad" podcast, host Sissi Pärsch addresses these questions and offers in-depth insights into the world of urban bike mobility. With exciting alternating guests from research, industry, politics and associations, the podcast sheds light on innovative approaches, current challenges and, of course, visions for the transport revolution. The "CatchUp" format is particularly varied when editor-in-chief Laurenz Utech joins in.

Together, Sissi and Laurenz discuss the latest trends, the most pressing issues and exciting developments in the cycling industry. From political decisions to technical innovations and social discussions about cycling - "Nimms Rad" offers inspiring content for anyone who wants to help shape the future of cycling. A must-read for mobility fans, cycling enthusiasts and anyone who wants to make our cities more sustainable and liveable. The 62nd episode of the podcast, which is part of the online blog "nimms-rad.de", was released at the beginning of November. In this episode, host Sissi Pärsch spoke to Michael Sodar, founder of the Berlin-based children's bike brand TYPE Bikes, which develops sustainable bikes especially for children and young people.

Two YouTube channel recommendations

YouTube channel: "The driving instructor"

You shouldn't rely on tips and shop talk about traffic rules on the internet, in fact you should avoid it as much as possible, because it quickly mutates into a religious war, including hostility and insults, in the comments at the latest. "The driving instructor" on YouTube is completely different. Using videos from his real-life driving school and driving school car, he shows us typical everyday situations in which something has always gone wrong.

This is the YouTube channel of "Der Fahrlehrer"Photo: Screenshot/Der FahrlehrerThis is the YouTube channel of "Der Fahrlehrer"

He then comments on the situation on the video screen. Sometimes, however, he also takes on other people's videos or videos sent in from the traffic and picks apart the content, the attitude of the sender or the behaviour of the "guilty party" in the video according to all the rules - not of the art, but of the StVO. Every now and then he gets upset, but always remains objective, as a driving instructor, which is what he is, should do. It's good for the entertainment factor! Under the QR code you will find a completely bike-specific episode, but you can also refresh your knowledge of the traffic regulations in an entertaining way with the bike-free videos.

YouTube channel: "Danny MacAskill"

The Godfather of bike control! It's hard to know exactly what his job title should be: Stunt rider, professional mountain biker, show rider, trials virtuoso or simply one of the people with the best bike control in history - Danny MacAskill. Anyone who is interested in cycling should have marvelled at his daring climbing and downhill passages - just to see what you can do on a bike.

And it's not just his bike and body control that are incredible; the wit, natural charm and creativity in the Scotsman's videos have quickly catapulted his YouTube channel to pole position on the scene. The episodes "Danny Daycare", in which he takes a three-year-old on a stunt ride in a single-track trailer, or his "Gymnasium", in which he spectacularly... abuses a sports hall complete with training equipment, are unrivalled! Not for the faint-hearted and definitely nothing to copy, but absolutely worth seeing!

Blog: "bikewander"

In terms of the weather, we bikers are facing the darkest time of year: little light, short days, rarely great conditions to enjoy the bike and the landscape. That's when it's a triple joy to see that others don't have to struggle through the grimy weather, but instead cycle through the most beautiful spots on earth on their bikes or a herd of them, thankfully often documented by a camera. The results then impress on portals such as Instagram. However, following individual globetrotters or bike tourers in this way can be a bit of a drag. And if you want variety, you quickly have to scroll through a lot of posts.

That's why we really like the "bikewander" channel, a platform shared by bike travellers across all climate and time zones. The image uploads only need to be coded with the corresponding hashtag, and the images collected in this way also appear to be hand-picked, as the quality is consistently super to sensational. The mix of motifs is as colourful as the people who want to share their bike experiences with us. This is not an information channel, but rather one for browsing, dreaming, being inspired and soaking up the sun, albeit only indirectly. Great community, awesome pictures, great characters, great motifs and no frills - and no shabby product placements.

Cycling community website

Cycling tours are twice as much fun for two? Well, then the fun level will increase rapidly with the community website. On the platform, friends, strangers, acquaintances, companions or colleagues can plan and organise trips together. Registration takes less than two minutes, and only those who are registered and confirmed users can see their potential fellow cyclists, including their profile picture and nickname. The tours are organised geographically, always with a map and expected distance.

The portal is not only a source of ideas for new tours, but also connects people with the same interests without a lot of frills. Limits can be set for the group size, so a group tour can hardly get out of hand. Most tours were very well attended with 10 to 15 participants. As soon as you are registered, you can contact your fellow travellers via the platform and discuss details. After an hour, we hadn't read a single unfriendly line - that's exactly how it should be! If you're open to new people and cycle routes, you should definitely make an appearance here. Link: app.cyclist.community/index

Social media channels of the ADFC

Facts, facts, facts: Always stay informed, even between issues of MYBIKE? The Allgemeiner Deutscher Fahrrad Club (ADFC) is always biker-friendly but objective and provides the latest news on its social media channels about transport policy, the expansion of cycle path networks, traffic situations in winter, new laws relating to bikes or upcoming events such as rallies or demos.

Social media channels of the ADFCPhoto: Screenshot/ADFCSocial media channels of the ADFC

The entertainment value is not quite as high as is typical for news, but the content is selected and relevant. And you're not inundated with six posts a day, so it's really worth adding the ADFC national association to your list of followers on Facebook, Instagram or X (formerly Twitter), even if you're not on your bike every day. Pedelec riders are currently increasingly happy to receive tips on good and sometimes even free charging logistics.
